Fill Dirt vs Gravel Base: Which to Put Under Your Project

Fill dirt and gravel base are not the same pile with two names — use fill dirt to raise grade cheaply where nothing sits on it and you’ll cap with topsoil; use a compacted gravel base wherever load, drainage, or frost movement matters (under patios, sheds, driveways, and retaining walls). Mixing them up is how patios sink and slabs crack.

The core difference

  • Fill dirt is mineral subsoil with the organics screened out. It’s cheap, dimensionally stable once compacted, and biologically dead — it holds grade but grows nothing and carries no load on its own.
  • Gravel base is dense-graded crushed stone (road base, crusher run, Class II base). Angular particles and fines lock into a near-rigid platform when compacted, so it spreads load, drains water, and resists frost heave.

When fill dirt is the right call

Fill dirt earns its place wherever you’re moving elevation and no structure depends on that layer directly:

  • Raising a low, soggy corner of the yard so water runs to the street
  • Backfilling a trench, old stump void, or the bottom of a deep grade raise
  • Building the bottom two-thirds of any tall raise, where a root will never reach

Add 10–20% for compaction — loose fill occupies more space on the truck than it does once tamped into lifts, and clay-heavy fill loses more than sandy. The fill dirt calculator builds that overage in.

When gravel base is the right call

Anything that carries weight or sits in the weather needs a gravel base, not fill:

  • Patios and walkways: the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute specifies a minimum 4 inches of compacted aggregate for pedestrian patios, 6 inches or more over clay or in freeze-thaw zones, and 8–12 inches for driveways.
  • Retaining walls: segmental walls need a compacted granular base and leveling pad under the first course — guidance from the National Concrete Masonry Association treats the base as part of the wall system, not an afterthought. See estimating a retaining wall.
  • Sheds and pads: a gravel base keeps the floor level and dry; concrete over bare fill risks cracking as the fill keeps settling.

The common stack: fill first, then gravel

Most real projects use both, in order. Say a shed pad sits 12 inches low:

  1. Fill dirt to within ~6 inches of finished grade (cheap bulk).
  2. Compacted gravel base for the top 4–6 inches (structural).
  3. Shed floor or slab on top.

The volume math (same formulas, different margins)

Both layers use the standard Yardly conversions:

Fill (spread layer): Square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 = cubic yards Gravel (box): Length × Width × (depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = cubic yards

Then add the material-specific margin: fill +10–20% for compaction, gravel +15–20% for compaction. Crushed stone also flips to weight at about 1.4 tons per yard, which matters if your supplier sells by the ton.

Worked example: a 10 × 12 ft shed pad, 12 inches low

That’s about 5.3 cubic yards total across two materials — two different piles, one delivery each. Lifts matter: spread and compact both in 2–4 inch layers; dumping the full depth and compacting once leaves the bottom loose, and loose bottom consolidates later, taking your shed with it.

Is fill dirt cheaper than gravel?

Yes, usually by a wide margin — fill dirt is a by-product of someone else's excavation, while crushed gravel is a processed, screened product. That's exactly why the layered approach saves money: build depth with cheap fill, then spend on gravel only for the few inches that do structural work.

Do I need fabric between fill dirt and gravel?

Only over soft or muddy subgrade. A geotextile separation fabric stops soil fines from migrating up into the gravel base, which would soften it. Over firm, well-drained ground you can skip it.
