How it works

Length × width × depth (in feet), divided by 27, gives cubic yards of topsoil. Add a little for settling.

Formula: (Length × Width × Depth÷12) ÷ 27 = cubic yards

Good for

  • Raised garden beds
  • New lawn installation
  • Lawn topdressing
  • Filling low spots

Tips

  • For raised beds, 6–12″ of quality screened topsoil gives roots room to grow.
  • Screened topsoil is finer and better for seeding; unscreened is cheaper for bulk grading.
  • New lawns usually get 4–6″ of good topsoil.
