Fill Dirt vs Topsoil: When to Use Each

Two different materials for two different jobs: fill dirt builds the grade, topsoil grows what sits on it. Most yard projects that change elevation need both, layered in that order — fill dirt to within 4–6 inches of finished height, then topsoil for the last few inches. Using one where the other belongs is the single most expensive mistake in residential dirt work.
The difference is organic matter, and nothing else matters as much
Dig a hole in undisturbed ground and you cut through layers. The dark, crumbly surface layer — where roots, worms, and microbes live — is what soil scientists call the A horizon and what everyone else calls topsoil. Below it sits paler, denser mineral subsoil (the B and C horizons). That small organic fraction is the whole story:
- Topsoil has it, so it holds water, feeds roots, and stays loose. It also keeps decomposing — which means it keeps shrinking.
- Fill dirt has it removed on purpose, so it stays dimensionally stable and compacts tightly. It also can’t support much growth.
Every property of each material follows from that. Topsoil settles because organic matter breaks down and leaves voids behind. Fill dirt doesn’t settle much once compacted, because there’s nothing left in it to rot.
What each material is actually for
Fill dirt does structural and grade work:
- Raising a low corner of the yard so water drains toward the street instead of the house
- Backfilling a trench, an old pool, or a stump void
- Building the base under a patio, shed pad, or driveway apron
- Bulking up the bottom two-thirds of any deep raise, where a plant will never send a root
Topsoil does growing work:
- The final 4–6 inches under a new lawn
- Planting beds and borders
- Repairing thin, scraped-down soil left behind by builders
The rule that prevents most trouble: never bury topsoil under anything you don’t want to sink, and never plant into fill dirt without capping it.
One formula, two layers
Both materials use the same volume math. For a spread layer:
Square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 = cubic yards
For a hole or trench you’re filling:
Length × width × depth (all in feet) ÷ 27 = cubic yards
The 324 comes from the fact that one cubic yard spread 1 inch deep covers 324 square feet. The fill dirt calculator and the soil calculator each run this, but the estimating decision is how you split the total depth between the two materials — and that split is almost always “everything below the last 4–6 inches is fill.”
Two adjustments before you order:
- Fill dirt: add 10–20% for compaction. A yard of loose dirt on the truck becomes noticeably less than a yard once it’s tamped into lifts. Clay-heavy fill loses more than sandy fill.
- Topsoil: add 10–15% for settling. Fluffed delivered topsoil compresses as it’s raked, walked on, and watered in. Three loose inches ends up closer to two and a half.
Worked example: raising a soggy back corner
A 500 sq ft corner sits about 10 inches low and stays wet after rain. The plan is to raise it and put lawn back.

Placement order matters as much as the math:
- Strip the sod and any soft organic layer off the low spot first. Fill placed over spongy turf just settles into it.
- Place the fill in 4–6 inch lifts, compacting each one, and shape a consistent fall away from any structure as you go. Fixing the slope after the topsoil is down is far harder.
- Spread the topsoil, rake, and let it settle — or water it in — before seeding or laying sod. The new lawn project estimator bundles soil, seed or sod, and starter amendments into one list.
One clearance rule worth remembering while you’re building height near the house: keep finished soil well below any wood framing or siding. Dirt against wood is a rot problem regardless of how good your drainage is.
Weight, delivery, and why this isn’t a pickup-truck job
Fill dirt is the heavier of the two — commonly around 2,200–2,800 pounds per cubic yard depending on clay content and moisture, against roughly 2,000–2,700 for topsoil. Either way, one heaped yard of damp material puts a half-ton pickup over its payload. Anything past 2 yards is a delivery, and the example above (18 yards across two materials) is two separate deliveries from two different piles.
Cost runs the other direction from weight: fill dirt is usually the cheapest bulk material a landscape yard sells, because it’s a by-product of somebody else’s excavation. Screened topsoil is a processed product and priced like one. That gap is exactly why the layered approach saves money — you’re only buying the expensive material for the few inches where it does work.
Four mistakes that cost real money
- Filling a deep low spot entirely with topsoil. It’s the expensive material and it will settle, so you pay twice.
- Dumping fill in one deep pile instead of lifts. Looks finished on day one, dishes out by the following spring.
- Planting straight into fill dirt. Grass germinates, then stalls in July when there’s nothing holding moisture.
- Not asking where the fill came from. “Clean fill” should mean soil and rock only — no chunks of asphalt, roots, or construction debris that will rot, void, and settle later.

Do you have to compact fill dirt?
Yes, if anything is going to sit on it or drain across it. Fill placed in one deep dump settles under its own weight for a year or more. The standard method is lifts: spread 4–6 inches, compact, then spread the next layer. A hand tamper handles a small patch; anything larger justifies a rented plate compactor.
Can I use topsoil to fill a low spot?
