Grass seed math is one line: (square feet ÷ 1,000) × rate in pounds per 1,000 sq ft = pounds of seed. The catch is the rate, which swings more than thirtyfold across species — 0.25 lb per 1,000 sq ft for centipedegrass, 9 lbs for a tall fescue blend. Get the species right and the arithmetic is trivial. Get it wrong and you either buy four times too much seed or lay down a lawn that never fills in.

The formula

(Square feet ÷ 1,000) × lbs per 1,000 sq ft = pounds of seed needed

A 4,200 sq ft lawn seeded with a tall fescue blend at 7 lbs per 1,000 sq ft: 4.2 × 7 = 29.4 lbs, so buy 30. The grass seed calculator runs this for any area and rate, and the new lawn project estimator bundles seed with the soil prep underneath it.

Measure first. Seed is one of the few landscape materials where guessing the area high costs you real money — a 20% overestimate on a 5,000 sq ft fescue lawn is seven extra pounds you didn’t need.

Why the rate swings so wildly by species

Here’s the part most rate tables leave out: the recommended rate isn’t a weight target, it’s a seed-count target. Turfgrass establishment guidance aims for a specific density of live seed on the ground — West Virginia University Extension puts the useful range at 1,000 to 2,000 live seeds per square foot. Below that you get gaps that weeds fill; above it you get overcrowding.

Now back out the arithmetic. Hitting 1,000–2,000 seeds per square foot means delivering roughly one to two million live seeds across 1,000 sq ft. WVU recommends 1–2 lbs of Kentucky bluegrass to do that job, and 4–8 lbs of tall fescue. Same seed count, four to five times the weight — which tells you a pound of bluegrass is carrying something on the order of a million seeds, while a pound of tall fescue carries a few hundred thousand. Bluegrass seed is dust; fescue seed is chaff-sized.

That single fact explains the whole table. You are not buying pounds of grass. You are buying a seed count, priced by weight. It also explains why substituting species in a mix without adjusting the rate produces a thin lawn — swap ryegrass for bluegrass pound for pound and you’ve cut your seed count by three-quarters.

Rates by species

Published ranges differ a little between states because they’re tuned to local climate and the losses expected there. These are representative:

Two adjustments worth making before you commit to a number:

  • Spring seeding? Use the top of the range. Virginia Tech recommends the higher rate for spring plantings of cool-season grass, which makes sense — those seedlings have weeks, not months, before summer tests them.
  • Mixed bag? Follow the bag. A blend’s rate isn’t the average of its components; the label rate accounts for the actual proportions by weight.

New lawn vs overseeding: halve it

Overseeding an existing lawn uses roughly half the bare-soil rate, because most of the ground is already occupied. K-State Extension gives the worked version: tall fescue at 6–8 lbs per 1,000 sq ft on bare soil becomes 3–4 lbs when overseeding, and a bluegrass lawn seeded at 3–4 lbs drops to about 2.

That last row trips people up. A dead patch in the middle of a lawn is bare soil — seed it at the full rate, not the overseeding rate, even though the surrounding turf is thick.

Read the seed tag before you trust the bag

The pounds your calculator returns are pure seed. What’s in the bag may not be.

Certified seed carries a tag listing each cultivar’s percentage by weight and its germination percentage — Virginia Tech recommends buying the blue-tag certified product and checking that it was tested within the past year. Do the multiplication: a bag that’s 70% seed by weight, at 85% germination, delivers about 0.6 lb of viable seed per pound of product. Coated and pelleted products are the common case here, since the coating is counted in the bag weight.

If your tag numbers are well under 100%, divide your calculated pounds by the pure-live-seed fraction to get the product weight to actually buy.

Worked example: a full yard, two jobs

A 6,400 sq ft yard, cool-season region, tall fescue. The back 4,000 sq ft is being rebuilt from bare soil after regrading; the front 2,400 sq ft is thin and just needs thickening.

Total ≈ 36.4 lbs of pure seed → buy 40 lbs, or ~55 lbs if the bag tag shows 70% pure live seed. Add a bale of straw per 1,000 sq ft of the new-lawn area for moisture retention, which Illinois Extension recommends, and budget topsoil separately — the back yard’s regrade probably needs a soil layer under all that seed. Spreading it so the number actually means something

Buying the right poundage is half the job; putting it down evenly is the other half. Both WVU and Virginia Tech recommend the same technique: split the total in half and make two passes at right angles to each other. One pass at full rate leaves stripes wherever the spreader pattern overlapped or missed — and stripes in a new lawn are permanent for a season.

Then get the seed into contact with soil. Dragging an upturned leaf rake across the surface is enough for most seedbeds; seed simply scattered on crusted ground mostly feeds birds. Small-seeded species like bluegrass and bermudagrass belong right at the surface, while fescues and ryegrasses tolerate being worked in as deep as a half inch.

Timing beats everything

If you seed a cool-season lawn in June, no rate saves it. Illinois Extension is direct about this: late summer to early fall is ideal, April is a distant second, and late spring through midsummer regularly fails as heat stalls seedling development. Warm-season grasses invert this — they want late spring, once soil temperatures are genuinely warm.

Multiply the rate by five. A tall fescue blend at 7 lbs per 1,000 sq ft needs about 35 lbs; Kentucky bluegrass at 2 lbs needs about 10 lbs; bermudagrass at 1 lb needs about 5 lbs. Buy in whole bags and round up — leftover seed keeps for spot repairs.

What happens if you put down too much grass seed?

You get a worse lawn, not a thicker one.
