A productive raised bed isn’t filled with topsoil or bagged “garden soil” — it’s a blended mix, most often about equal thirds topsoil, compost, and an aeration ingredient (coarse sand, perlite, or fine bark). Get the ratio right and the volume is the same container math you’d use for any box; get it wrong and the bed turns into a dense, waterlogged block by midsummer.

Why straight topsoil fails inside a frame

Topsoil works great in the open ground because earthworms, freezing, and root churn keep it loose from below. Drop it into a wooden frame and that machinery disappears. Pure topsoil compacts under its own weight and irrigation, drains poorly, and starves roots of oxygen. That’s the whole reason raised-bed mixes are blends, not single materials — the aeration ingredient recreates the pore space the box can’t.

The common ratios

Most extension and master-gardener guidance lands on one of three blends, all built from the same three parts:

  • Equal thirds (the default veg mix): 1/3 blended topsoil + 1/3 compost + 1/3 aeration. Versatile for mixed vegetables.
  • 60 / 30 / 10: 60% topsoil, 30% compost, 10% aeration — a heavier mix for clay-prone sites where you want more structure.
  • Shallow-bed or herb mix: roughly 50/50 topsoil and compost with a handful of perlite per container — enough drainage for rosemary, thyme, and other Mediterranean herbs.

What each part does:

Splitting the volume by ratio

First get total bed volume, then divide it by your ratio. The container formula:

Length × Width × Height (in feet) ÷ 27 = cubic yards of mix

A 4 × 8 ft bed filled 10 inches deep = 4 × 8 × (10 ÷ 12) = 26.7 cu ft ÷ 27 ≈ 1 cubic yard total. Equal-thirds means:

What to order: bulk vs bags

  • Bags make sense for one or two small beds. Topsoil and compost bags run about 1–2 cu ft; perlite and coarse sand come in smaller bags. A single 4×8 bed is a manageable trunk load.
  • Bulk wins past about 2–3 yards. Many municipalities sell screened compost by the yard cheaply, and a landscape yard will deliver topsoil and a sand or bark fines by the cubic yard. One cubic yard = 27 cubic feet, so a yard of each component for several beds is a single delivery, not 80 bags.

Order the aeration ingredient last — it’s the smallest volume and easiest to buy in bags even when the rest comes bulk.

Settling is normal, not a mistake

A fresh mix drops 10–15% as the compost settles and the structure knocks down in year one. Fill beds to about 2 inches below the rim and plan to top up with compost each spring. That first-season drop is why you don’t skimp on the initial volume.
