Sand Calculator: How Much Sand for Pavers, Sandboxes, and Leveling

The amount of sand you need is almost always settled by three numbers — square footage, depth in inches, and the right sand type for the job — not by guesswork. Pavers take a strict 1 inch of coarse bedding sand, a backyard sandbox wants 6–12 inches of washed play sand, and leveling an above-ground pool base calls for 2–3 inches of mason sand. Everything else is the same volume formula applied at a different depth, which is exactly what the sand calculator runs for you.
Match the sand to the job first
Before you measure anything, decide which sand you’re ordering, because the wrong kind fails the project even at the right volume:
- Coarse bedding sand (ASTM C33) — angular, washed, free-draining. This is the only sand that belongs under pavers.
- Washed play sand — fine, rounded, screened for dust. For sandboxes and children’s play.
- Mason sand — fine and clean, spreads smooth. For pool bases and mortar.
- Fill sand / concrete sand — economical utility sand. For general grading and drainage, never for play or paver beds.
Construction sand, builder’s sand, and stone dust are the usual mistakes — they pack with clay or silica dust, hold water, and either irritate skin or wash out from under a load.
The volume math
Every sand estimate reduces to one formula, with depth in inches:
(Length × Width × Depth in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = cubic yards
Two planning conversions keep orders sane:
- 1 cubic yard of dry sand ≈ 2,500–2,700 lb, so a 50 lb bag is about 0.5 cubic feet — roughly 50–55 bags per yard. Wet sand runs heavier, so treat the ton estimate as the planning number and confirm with your supplier.
- Once the estimate passes about 1 cubic yard (≈ 40–55 bags), bulk delivery usually beats hauling bags and often costs less per yard.
Paver bedding: exactly 1 inch
This is the layer people over-pour. The standard is strict — 1 inch compacted, screeded at about 1.25 inches loose — because an unconfined sand bed deeper than ~1.5 inches behaves like a fluid: pavers sink at different rates and pump sand up through the joints.
The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute specifies a minimum 4-inch compacted aggregate base under that 1-inch bed for pedestrian patios — sand is the leveling cushion, not the structure. For a 12×12 ft patio (144 sq ft), 1 inch works out to about 0.44 cubic yards, or roughly 24 bags. Sandbox: 6–12 inches of the safe stuff
Depth is driven by who’s playing, not by the box size:
- Toddlers (sensory play): 3–4 inches is enough.
- Most backyard boxes: 6–9 inches gives real digging room without hitting bottom.
- Active older kids or play structures: push toward 10–12 inches.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Public Playground Safety Handbook treats loose-fill sand as appropriate surfacing for fall protection and warns against letting the compressed depth drop below about 9 inches under equipment — a useful ceiling for how seriously to take depth if a swing set sits over the box. Sand also compacts and gets tracked out, so buy 10–15% over the raw number and top up after the first season.
Material matters as much as volume: use washed, screened play sand and skip anything labeled construction, builder’s, or masonry sand. Those can carry sharp particles and respirable silica dust that play sand is processed to remove. Look for toy-safety labeling on the bag, and cover the box when not in use to keep out moisture, leaves, and pets.
Worked example: an 8×4 ft box (32 sq ft) at 9 inches = 32 × 0.75 = 24 cubic feet ≈ 0.89 cubic yards, about 48 bags.
Leveling and pool base: 2–3 inches, over solid ground
“Leveling” with sand means two different things, and mixing them up wastes material:
- Smoothing a pool base. Above-ground pools rest on 2–3 inches of mason sand that cushions the vinyl liner and irons out minor ground bumps. An 18 ft round pool at 2 inches needs about 1.6 cubic yards; a 24 ft round at 3 inches needs about 4.2 cubic yards. Avoid sand with pebbles — anything hard punctures the liner.
- Correcting a slope or filling a low spot. Sand alone is the wrong tool. Level and compact the subgrade with dirt or gravel first, then lay the thin sand smoothing layer on top. Trying to flatten a yard with sand means hauling far more than the math shows and ends up soft and unstable.
For shallow grading and trench backfill, 2–6 inches of utility fill sand in thin lifts is fine — just don’t confuse it with the clean sands above.
