Sod Calculator: How Much Sod for Your Yard

Sod estimating has one number that travels and several that don’t. Square feet is the number — measure the area, add a cut margin, and you have something every sod farm in the country understands. Rolls, slabs, pieces, and pallets all mean different things at different farms, so treat those as a conversion you do after you know your square footage, using your supplier’s two numbers: coverage per piece and coverage per pallet.
The formula
Length × Width × (1 + waste) = square feet of sod
Square feet ÷ coverage per piece = pieces • Square feet ÷ coverage per pallet = pallets
The sod calculator runs this for you and returns all three figures at once, defaulting to a 10 sq ft roll and a 450 sq ft pallet. Those defaults are the common case, not a standard — more on that below. For irregular yards, don’t try to be clever with a single formula. Split the lawn into rectangles, calculate each, and add them together. A yard broken into three rectangles you can actually measure beats one geometric approximation you can’t check.
Why “how many pallets” has no universal answer
Every other landscape material has a settled unit. Concrete is cubic yards, gravel is tons, mulch is cubic yards. Sod is the exception: it is sold by the piece, the roll, the square yard, the pallet, and the square foot, and none of those pieces are standardized across farms.
Purdue Extension’s Establishing a Lawn From Sod puts the classic pallet at 50 square yards — 450 square feet — and describes the common cut formats: slab pieces “typically 18 inches wide and 24 inches long,” and rolls “typically 18 inches wide and 6 feet long or 24 inches wide and 5 feet long.” Work those out and the coverage per piece swings by more than threefold:

Pallet coverage varies on top of that — farms commonly ship 400, 450, or 500 square feet, and some run 600 or more. So a quote for “four pallets” could be 1,600 square feet or 2,400 square feet of grass. Always convert from square feet using the farm’s own numbers, and confirm them on the order rather than the website.
Waste scales with your edges, not your area
Here’s the part that generic “add 10%” advice gets wrong. Sod waste is created at boundaries, when you cut a piece to fit a curve, a walk, or a sprinkler head. That means it is a function of your trimmed edge length — and edge length does not grow in proportion to area.
Purdue’s guidance gives the constraint that makes this concrete: as a rule of thumb, “don’t use pieces less than 9 inches wide or 18 inches long,” because narrow strips dry out and die. Any off-cut below that threshold is not a small piece. It is garbage.
Work from that and you get a planning heuristic that’s far more honest than a flat percentage:
- Straight trimmed edges — the off-cut is a clean rectangle you can start the next row with. Lose roughly 0.25 sq ft per foot of trimmed edge.
- Curved edges and obstacles — the off-cut is a wedge, and wedges are rarely reusable. Lose roughly 1 sq ft per foot of trimmed edge.
- Any rip narrower than 9 inches — 100% waste, the full length of the rip.
Run three real shapes through it:

Same 5%-versus-15% spread the calculator’s waste slider covers — but now you can see why. The plain rectangle barely wastes anything because its edges are few and its cuts get reused. The little strip between sidewalk and curb wastes as badly as the curvy front yard, for a completely different reason: it’s 3.5 feet wide, two rolls make 4 feet, and the 6-inch rip you take off the second roll is under the usable minimum, so it goes in the truck.
The practical takeaway: small, narrow, or curvy areas need a bigger percentage than big plain ones. If your lawn is mostly one clean rectangle, 5% is genuinely enough.
Worked example: 2,426 square feet in two shapes
A whole-yard replacement. The back yard is a clean 45 × 30 ft rectangle. The front is 900 sq ft wrapped around curved planting beds and a walkway.

At 10 sq ft per roll that’s 243 rolls. At 450 sq ft per pallet it’s 5.39 pallets — and that decimal is where the real decision lives.
Round up to the piece, not the pallet
Rounding 5.39 up to 6 pallets buys 2,700 sq ft and leaves 274 square feet of surplus. With most materials that’s fine; leftover gravel, seed, and mulch all keep. Sod does not. It is a harvested living plant, and Purdue is blunt about the clock: it should be “delivered and installed within 24 hours of harvest,” and “the longer the sod sits on the pallet the more it will deteriorate.” Surplus sod is not inventory. It’s compost by Wednesday.
So ask whether the farm sells partial pallets or by the piece. Five pallets plus 18 rolls covers 2,430 sq ft and wastes almost nothing. If they only sell full pallets, order six — but decide before delivery day where those extra 274 square feet are going, whether that’s a side yard, a bare strip along the fence, or a neighbor.
What you should not do is round down to save money. Running short means a second delivery fee and, worse, a second harvest date: sod cut a week later can differ visibly in color and thickness from what’s already down, and that seam shows for a season.
The inch under the sod
Sod arrives roughly an inch thick, soil and roots included. That inch has to come out of your grade, not sit on top of it — finish the soil about an inch below driveways, walks, and patios so the installed lawn ends up flush. Grade level with the hardscape and the new lawn sits proud, scalps on the first mow, and sheds water onto the concrete.
That interacts with your soil order. NC State Extension’s Carolina Lawns recommends incorporating lime and fertilizer into “the top 6 to 8 inches of the soil using a disk or rototiller,” raking to a smooth final grade with “soil particles no larger than marble size,” then rolling lightly to firm the surface before planting. Weight: why this is a delivery, not a pickup
Purdue puts sod at 35 to 40 pounds per square yard. Convert the example: 2,426 sq ft is 270 square yards, which comes to roughly 9,400–10,800 pounds — close to five tons of grass, and more if it rained the morning it was cut.
Per pallet that’s 1,750 to 2,000 pounds. A half-ton pickup cannot legally or safely carry one. Two useful consequences:
- Plan on delivery with a forklift, and be on site when it arrives so pallets get dropped near where they’ll be laid. Carrying 40-pound pieces an extra 60 feet, 243 times, is the difference between a hard day and a miserable one.
- Match your order to your labor. The 24-hour clock means everything you order has to go down that day. Five pallets is a crew job, not a solo Saturday. If you can’t lay it all, order in stages instead of ordering it all and watching half of it die on the pallet.
The calendar is the reason you’re buying sod
Seed timing is unforgiving — a cool-season lawn seeded in June mostly fails, no matter the rate. Sod’s window is wider, and that flexibility is usually the whole point.
NC State notes that cool-season sod “can be installed any time the ground is not frozen,” while warm-season sod “will not produce roots unless the soil temperature exceeds 55°F for several weeks,” with April through July 1 as the best window for warm-season grasses. Soil temperature, not the calendar date, is the gate on the warm-season side.
Once it’s down, both Purdue and NC State converge on the same establishment routine: roll the lawn for sod-to-soil contact, then start watering immediately. NC State advises keeping the top 1.5 inches of soil moist with light watering “two or three times a day for 7 to 21 days,” then moving to deep weekly irrigation of 6 to 8 inches after the third mowing. Purdue’s test for whether you’re there yet is direct: grab a corner and pull — new roots are white, old roots brown — and expect rooting around 10 days in.
